Principal Chemical Risk Assessor

Dave is Principal Investigator for high-profile projects providing scientific advice to UK government and industry on risks posed by legacy contaminants and emerging chemicals of regulatory interest. He is water quality lead for impact assessment of the UKs new generation nuclear reactors at Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C.

He has a wide range of experience in scientific, financial and team management across multiple projects investigating the environmental risk, fate and effects of diffuse industrial chemicals, biocides, and complex effluents to international regulatory guidelines. He represents Cefas on the Ecotoxicology Group of the National Centre for Replacement, Refinement Reduction of animals in research. He is a former member of the UK Chemical and Marine Task Teams and the Clean and Safe Seas Evidence Group developing chemical quality and ecological standards for river basin status classification for the Water Framework Directive, also ensuring links with colleagues on Marine Strategy. He was also a member of the European Expert Group contributing to the development of water quality guidelines, with a focus on sediments. In his role as research manager with Defra Chemicals and Emerging Technologies he established international relationships with collaborators in Europe, the US and Japan for endocrine disruption research also contributing to the development of UK and European legislation in this area. As research lead for Defra Water Quality he facilitated engagement with industry on development of Government policy on non-agricultural diffuse pollution.
